When and why Janmashtami is celebrated

The day of the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna is celebrated with great pomp. Janmashtami festival is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Krishna, which is celebrated on the Ashtami date of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month after Rakshabandhan.

Sri Krishna was the 8th son of Devaki and Vasudeva. The king of the city of Mathura was Kansa, who was very tyrannical. His atrocities were increasing day by day. There was a time that the 8th son of his sister Devaki would kill him. Hearing this, Kansa put her sister Devaki in a dungeon with her husband Vasudev.

Kansa kills 7 children before Devaki’s Krishna. When Devaki gave birth to Lord Krishna, Lord Vishnu ordered Vasudeva to bring Shri Krishna to Yashoda Mata and Nanda Baba in Gokul, where he would be safe from his maternal uncle Kansa. Shri Krishna was raised under the supervision of Yashoda Mata and Nanda Baba. Just, in the joy of his birth, the festival of Janmashtami is celebrated every year since then.

Happy Janmashtmi WhatsApp Status 2019

“Experience cold or heat, pleasure or pain. These experiences are fleeting; they come and go. Bear them patiently.”

-From Bhagavad Gita

“And when immorality prevails, O Krishna, the women of the family become corrupted; when women are corrupted, social problems arise.”

-Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna

“It is better to perform one’s own duties imperfectly than to master the duties of another. By fulfilling the obligations he is born with, a person never comes to grief.”
-From Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna

“Even though scolded by the wicked or insulted, ridiculed, calumniated, beaten, bound, robbed of his living or spat upon or otherwise abominably treated by the ignorant-being thus variously shaken and placed in dire extremities, the man who desires his well-being should deliver himself by his own effort through patience and non-resistance.”

-From Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna

“As the tiger devours other animals, so does the tiger of intense love and zeal for the Lord eat up lust, anger, and other passions. The devotion of the gopis is the devotion of love, constant, unmixed and unflinching.”

-By Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

“Krishna, who gives delight to all and who is blissful in his own being, divided himself into as many Krishnas as there were gopis and danced and played with them. Each girl felt the divine presence and divine love of Sri Krishna. Each felt herself the most blessed. Each one’s love for Krishna was so absorbing that she felt herself one with Krishna, nay knew herself to be Krishna. And wherever their eyes fell they saw only Krishna.”

-By Swami Prabhavananda

“The divine play of the gopis is the acme of the religion of love, in which individuality vanishes and there is communion. It is in this lila that Sri Krishna shows what he teaches, ‘Give up everything for me.’ Take shelter under Brindavan lila to understand Bhakti.”
-By Swami Vivekananda

“Krishna is Truth. He was born in the quite heart-caves of the Rishis. Those Rishis gradually transmitted their knowledge to their disciples. ThusKrishna was removed from the prison to Yasoda’s house – the disciple’s. There is no pain in this unique delivery. The Guru gives out the child without the agony of labor pains.”
-By Swami Chimayananda

” You have the right to work, but never to the fruit of the work. You should never engage in action for the sake of reward, nor should you long for inaction.”
-From Bhagavad Gita

“The wise do not grieve for the dead or the living. As the soul passes in this body through childhood, youth and old age. Even so, it is taking on another body.”
-From Bhagavad Gita

“To action alone, you have a right, never to its fruit; let not the fruits of action be your motive nor let there be in your attachment to inaction. Do your work, abandoning attachment, with an even mind in success and failure.”
-From Bhagavad Gita

“Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.”
-From Bhagavad Gita

“Krishna appears in this material world in His original eternal form, with two hands, holding a flute. He appears exactly in His eternal body, uncontaminated by this material world.”
-From Bhagavad Gita 4.6, Srila Prabhupada

“The Supersoul, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is the source of light.”
-From Bhagavad Gita 13.18, Srila Prabhupada

Simply by chanting the holy name of Krishna – Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare – a devotee of the Lord can approach the supreme destination easily and happily, but this destination cannot be approached by any other process of religion.
-From Bhagavad Gita 12.6

“Wherever there is Krishna, the master of all mystics and wherever there is Arjuna, the supreme archer, there will also certainly be opulence, victory, extraordinary power and morality.”
-From Bhagavad Gita 18.78, Srila Prabhupada

Other yajnas prescribed in the Vedic literature are not easy to perform in this Age of Kali, but the sankirtana-yajna is easy and sublime for all purposes.
-From Bhagavad Gita 3.10, Srila Prabhupada
